I had that option for the Sustainiac installed and its much less convenient, particularly having to turn the tone knob down for harmonic feedback - to me, its easier to just have that on a switch. My big bit of advice though, regardless of which you go for, is to have the Sustainer controls on switches rather than push/pull pots. Sonically, when they're both pretty much identical in my opinion. It's probably something that can be fixed with enough effort - particularly as its fine for studio use - but I haven't found time to do that yet. It may well just be some foible of how it was installed and set up, but at live use volumes it constantly feeds back as a low rumble when its on, even when not set to feedback mode. My favourite of the two though, is the Fernandes Sustainer. humbucking bridge pickup offers giant tone while the Texas Special single-coil middle pickup adds extra spank to the traditional Fender sound. #Fernandes sustainer guitar driver
The Sustainiac was fitted by a local luthier, ironically in a Fernandes guitar that didn't come with a Sustainer so needed routing for a battery pack - bit the rest of the much smaller Sustainiac kit fit in the existing cavities. The Fernandes Sustainer driver in the neck position expands the guitar's traditional sonic capabilities by creating near-infinite single or multi-string sustain. The Fernandes Sustainer came factory-fitted in a Fernandes/Burny Les Paul copy. I've got both the Fernandes Sustainer and the Sustainiac Steal Pro. #Fernandes sustainer guitar pro
So far, the Sustainiac Stealth Pro seems to be my best bet since it's smaller, which means I probably won't be needing to do any routing. Of course I'll be using the battery already included in my guitar, but I think I might be able to fit another battery in the compartment. I want to keep the installation as carve-free as possible, for example: wiring the pickup selector for bridge / bridge + sustainer / neck and replacing the tone pot with a 3-way switch to select the sustainer mode (I don't mind losing that one). In the control department, my guitar's got a pickup selector and volume and tone pots. It's an explorer-shaped guitar with EMG 81 and 60 pickups ( pic here, ain't she a pretty?). I've been thinking about installing one of these ( Sustainer or Sustainiac) in my LTD EX401-DX.
